Here at Elysium Magazine Towers we’re fond of the odd collaboration or two. Think Steve Jobs (RIP) and Steve Wozniak, or Dr Dre and Tupac (RIP). When done right, these collaborations are a thing of beauty where one compliments the other. So when we heard about premium whisky Johnnie Walker Blue Label getting together with Porsche Design Studio it just screamed über cool to us.
Having seen the final product, we have to say they’ve delivered on this, producing the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Collection by Porsche Design Studio – designed (they say) to enable men to celebrate their achievements today. We say why wait for a celebration, crack it open this minute. After all, life is a celebration!
The two heavy weights in their respective divisions of premium whisky and design have produced a collection consisting of ‘The Chiller’ and ‘The Cube’, with no hint of Philip Schofield in sight you’ll be glad to hear.
The Chiller (RRP £240) holds a single bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, encased in sophisticated dark blue leather and brushed titanium, whilst the top removes to function as an ice chiller. We think you’ll agree that it definitely looks the part.
The Cube (RRP £490) comes with an individually numbered bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label alongside an ice chiller, stainless steel tongs, and four bespoke Blue Label crystal glasses, ideal for entertaining. Something tells us this little beauty isn’t prepared for a bit-part cameo role, instead ensuring scene-stealing parts in any social situation.
The whisky itself is pretty special too – Johnnie Walker Blue Label has a mellow, rounded nose, with a dry smokiness mixing with raisin sweetness. Perfect pour: best savoured with the palate cleansed and cooled by iced water.
The Chiller and the Cube will be available at Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, and Royal Mile Whiskies from October 2011. Johnnie Walker Blue Label is available from selected Waitrose stores, Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and The Vintage House. RRP £140.
