Elysium is always keen to deliver, what we think are, the most unique or exclusive bottles to that burgeoning drinks cabinet of the discerning gent. This week we’ve decided to go further afield, Japan in fact, to bring you something new, and we’ve found something very special. Let Elysium introduce you to the Suntory Yamazaki single malt whisky.
Yes that’s right. A Japanese single malt whisky. Aged 12 years to perfection if you ask us. As with many things Japanese, whisky making is an art form. Their love affair with whisky began back in 1923 when the Yamazaki Distillery was built in Kyoto after the owner had been inspired by traditional Scottish whisky. This is Japan’s first, and oldest, distillery but the production process remains very much unchanged since the early days.
The Yamazaki 12 year old is the pioneer of Japanese whisky. Through the unique climate offered by this region of Japan a deep, multi-layered taste is waiting to be introduced to your drinks cabinet. The colour is the first thing that strikes you – pure gold. Next is on the nose where you’re greeted with a combination of persimmon, honey, clove, candied orange, peach and finally vanilla. On the palate you welcome spiced wood, coconut and butter. It’s a long sweet, woody finish. Sounds great, right?
Take it from us, whether you’re a true whisky aficionado or new to the world of whisky, a bottle of this in the discerning gent’s drinks cabinet is a true talking point. People will be intrigued to try a whisky from Japan, but once this golden treasure has danced around the palate they’ll become an instant fan.
This leads us nicely onto the perfect serve. Try it neat or with an ice ball to relish an undiluted taste. Or try it with water (they call it mizuwari) as the aroma flourishes and it can be enjoyed with a meal – as they often do in Japan. Finally, try it in a highball with soda – mellowing out the strong flavour and temping out the rich flavour of the whisky.
Suntory Yamazaki 12 year old is bottled at 43% ABV and is available in 70cl bottles from The Drink Shop RRP £43.15.
