App Summary

Scandinavians always seem to make things beautifully simplistic, yet never comprise style or substance. So it looks like they’ve done it again with a new social video app – Videofyme. It’s already taken Sweden by storm with more than 650,000 users uploading nearly 12,000 videos each day – that’s 500 per hour!

As social video looks set to be the next frontier in the digital timeline, numerous apps capable of capturing and editing video are vying for your attention. Elysium Magazine tells you why the discerning gent should have this handy little app at his disposal.

The Good

Videofyme essentially provides a powerful suite of movie editing tools, which are all very easy to use. Videos up to 5mins in length can be created using a variety of helpful tools  – add different lighting filters in a similar way to Instagram, add music from your own library or edit and trim where necessary by simply swiping the screen. Once you’re happy with the final edit you can then share the content across the Videofyme network and also the usual suspects like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr etc.

The sorting and categorising of videos help form the ‘Discover’ side of the app, hence tagging videos with the appropriate keywords can help to get your videos seen by a lot more people. It’s borrowed the functionality of Twitter with the use of hashtags to further group the video content,

The Bad

Like most freely available apps, adverts run along the bottom of the screen. If this is an aspect that frustrates you then you probably won’t like this either. Also the app is still in its infancy – whilst popular in Sweden it’s yet to attract the millions of users that household names in the app world achieve.

Verdict

Only a select few would admit to never needing video capture at some point in their lives. Celebrations, gatherings and funny moments are video-worthy and need to be watched over again and this app provides an easy way with the illusion of a professional video-editors touch. It’s got more functionality than Vine too. Bring out the inner Steven Spielberg in you.

Score: 7/10
