App: Sky Go Extra

App Summary

The Sky Go Extra app is all about watching the programmes you want, when you want and wherever you are. The original launch of Sky Go allowed users to stream Sky programming to their computers, tablets and phones but now the ‘Extra’ app adds the benefit of downloading and gives users access to their subscription packages wherever they go.

The Good

The Sky Go Extra app essentially buys the user rights to watch Sky content on up to four devices (watch on two devices at the same time), giving content the freedom of mobility. The multiple devices aspect means that numerous users (i.e. a family) can download programmes via WiFi to their own devices. Downloads can be enjoyed anywhere within 30 days without the need for a connection – loaded up for the daily commute, on holiday or simply another room in the home. A feature that’s sure to keep the discerning gent happy.

The Bad

Perhaps a limitation of the service is that programmes are deleted within two days of the moment you press play. This is fine for the majority of programming but for longer feature films this might pose a problem for some who like to dip in and out. Another drawback is the selection of some programmes – series like Mad Men have seasons one and three available but not season two.

Verdict

Sky has stepped up to the challenge posed by the likes of LoveFilm and Netflix. For those already subscribing to Sky this provides a new dimension to watching the content they’re paying for on the go. As the service establishes itself it’ll only get better.

Score: 7/10
