If you fancy your whisky on the mischievous side then Elysium Magazine has the tipple for you this week. Last year Thor was unleashed to bring its very own brand of Nordic mythology to the whisky aficionado’s world. Not to be outdone, Thor’s adopted brother Loki now gets his very own expression too. This week Elysium Magazine introduces to the drinks cabinet of the discerning gent Highland Park Loki Whisky.
The first thing you’ll notice about this Scotch whisky is the case. Housed in the same unique wooden frame as Thor, the contours of the case echo those of a traditional Viking long ship. It’s a powerful first sight look when you meet this bottle. Perhaps a play on the treacherous nature of Loki that he would adopt the same case as Thor – we’ll leave you to decide.
Of course it’s the whisky that’s of bigger concern for the discerning drinker. After the case, you’re then attracted to the golden hue of the whisky, similar in tone to the finest mead of past ages. The 15 year old single malt has a nose which brings up bitter orange and lemon peel which develops to a hint of gingerbread. Mixing with water brings a welcome with liquorice and aromatic smoke instead.
On the palate this whisky is as mischievous and shape-shifting as the Nordic god himself. An intense smoke fades to rich spiced apple flavours. This then develops into lemon and grapefruit. Mixing with water develops this whisky further with notes of dark chocolate combined with a soft smokiness. The finish continues the smoky theme but with vanilla. This is definitely a whisky to saviour and comeback to often to see what else your palate and nose can discover.
Loki is the second in The Valhalla Collection of four unique whiskies from Highland Park, each taking inspiration from the Nordic gods of old. It’s a great tale to discuss when enjoying a glass with friends or relaxing in your favourite chair after a hectic week.
Loki is 48.7% ABV and available is 70cl bottles from www.highlandpark.co.uk – RRP £130
