Saturday 25th January marks Burns Night and there’s only one tipple to enjoy as you celebrate the lyrical prowess of Robert Burns – Scotch whisky. The discerning gent will always demand the very best, especially at times of festivity, so make sure it’s a mighty fine dram like this week’s recommendation to the drinks cabinet – The Macallan 21 Fine Oak.
This line of whisky from The Macallan is triple cask matured to give it a combination of exquisite character. There aren’t many whiskies of this calibre that blends master craftsmanship and fine whisky aging for 21 years in addition to following such a systematic cycle.
First the European oak cask seasoned with sherry seeds the rich tones of dried fruits, spice and chocolate orange. Second the American oak cask, again seasoned with sherry, delivers delicate hints of citrus lemon and toffee sweetness. Finally the American oak cask, this time seasoned with bourbon, adds the floral aromas together with sweet notes of vanilla and fresh fruits.
The result is an exceptional triple cask whisky that is not only smooth, but delicate and complex too. The light amber hue adds to the allure, while the nose is intense and rich, with a hint of vanilla. It caresses the palate softly, developing into spice with a touch of orange. The long finish finally reveals a hint of smoky wood. Best enjoyed with friends on Burns Night, straight up or with a dash of water or ice to release its flavours.
The Macallan 21 Fine Oak is 43% ABV and available in 70cl bottles from The Drinks Shop, RRP £212
