This week, Elysium looks forward to Clooney returning to the big screen in Gravity.
Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a medical engineer on her first Space Shuttle mission and is accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney), who is in command of the shuttle flight, due to be his last. During a spacewalk, the space shuttle is destroyed, and Stone and Kowalsky are stranded in space with no communications with Earth.
The visual effects-heavy 3D film is directed by Alfonso Cuarón, whose last film was the cult hit Children Of Men.
Cuarón first eyed Robert Downey Jr. and Angelina Jolie for the lead roles, but Jolie turned the project down in September 2010, followed by Natalie Portman, who also decided against making it, leading Bullock to take the part.
Robert Downey Jr. left the film in October 2010 due to scheduling conflicts, and Clooney took over the role, much to the delight of investors.
The movie is primarily Bullock’s struggle to deal with being alone in space – much like Tom Hank’s in Castaway. We are looking forward to what the movie could bring, the visual effects are outstanding and the trailer gives us a good idea of what to expect.
Just how scary can space be when you’re all alone – very! Check out the video below where the stars of the movie talk more about this frightening angle. One thing is for sure, in space, nobody can hear you scream!
Gravity is out in the UK for November 2013.
