It’s set to be another stellar year for the discerning gent and his games console in 2016. This year will follow a similar theme to last year with spin-offs or new iterations of major game franchises taking centre stage. Here, Elysium Magazine takes a look at those new titles that deserve a place in your collection.

 

Street Fighter 5

A title which has been a mainstay for many growing up, the Street Fighter series has proven the test of time through 30 years of console gaming. That’s longevity. This new version, the fifth in the main series looks to entice the casual gamer back to the ‘streets’. Expect to see a quartet of new characters alongside the usual suspects you know, love and can probably remember the most devastating combos for.

DARK SOULS 3

Those already familiar with the ‘Souls’ series – from Demon Souls, Dark Souls or Bloodborne – will know exactly what this new title will have in store. Frustration, anger and plenty of pain. The premise is the same as before, trek through eerie dungeons and explore every single square centimetre repeatedly as you die for the umpteenth time so you can anticipate for the next turn until you meet a new nightmare around the following corner. One of the most challenging game series of all time. You’ll love to hate this game.

DOOM

Your eyes are not failing you, this year does indeed see the return of the hugely popular Doom series. It’s been a long 11 years since Doom 3 but it’s ready to return. Looking absolutely stunning in the graphics department, fans of this first-person shooter will certainly be looking forward to sending demons back to hell in the next instalment of the of the game.

HALO WARS 2

All hail the return of Master Chief…well sort of. Huge Halo fan but never heard of Halo Wars? Not to worry. This is a real-time strategy game giving you the power to command legions of Halo-themed troops and vehicles from an overhead view with original characters and storylines laced throughout. Big things are expected from the gaming team at Creative Assembly, so keep an eye out for this one.

HORIZON ZERO DAWN

An action/role-playing game from the creators of Killzone, Horizon Zero Dawn is played from the third-person perspective. The premise: you’re on Earth based in a lush apocalyptic world in the distant future where huge metal dinosaurs rule the land and humanity is now a form or tribalism where technology is core – think a Mad Max kind of world. Fight, escape and enjoy this new world from the safety of your gaming couch.
