Party like it’s 1922 – Great Gatsby fever hits London
Avid readers will know that Elysium Magazine are discerning drinkers – and the choice of venue is key to enjoy a drink. Imagine our delight when we discovered the Candlelight Club, which is an authentic 1920s prohibition themed club night in London. This May, to celebrate the forthcoming cinematic release of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, the club’s founders will be throwing a series of secret events around town sharing the glamorous decadence of a bygone era with a nation on the verge of a triple-dip recession.
The Candlelight Club effortlessly encapsulates the cultural vitality of the Roaring Twenties and aims to not just throw a good fancy dress party, but to give Londoners a true experience of the Jazz fuelled excesses of the period. Their parties have even attracted the attentions of Sky / HBO who asked the club to host a press launch for Sky Atlantic’s hit show Boardwalk Empire (season 2).
Now in its third year, The Candlelight Club has been the purveyor of authentic liquor and cocktails consumed in the early 20th Century. Bartenders and Mixologists from opulent establishments like Sketch, Artesian at the Langham Hotel, Soho House and St. John Hotel moonlight at Club to feed their passion for experimentation.
In keeping with the speakeasy concept, each event takes on a clandestine quality as the locations of the gatherings are only announced to guests a day before the soiree. Once Candlelight Club invitees arrive at their destination they enter a space entirely lit by candles and are transported to the vibe of era – with live 1920s Jazz bands, gramophone DJs, and an impeccably dressed crowd channeling the flapper spirit of Daisy Buchanan and dapper style of Jay Gatsby.
